Supporting Mothers

Strengthening Families and Communities

Creating safe spaces for refugee and migrant mothers during pregnancy and the first two years after birth.

Women and babies from pregnancy through infancy are exceptionally vulnerable in crises

When mothers are supported, families and communities thrive.

“I finally realized that being beaten regularly, and in front of the children, is not right. With help from AMURTEL, I found the courage to take steps to protect myself and my children.”

Programs

When women come together in supportive learning spaces, questions, experiences, and insights often take on a whole new meaning. Friendships form and learning becomes deeply personal and relevant. Over time, many women find their voices in new ways, both individually and collectively.

For mothers who are isolated in a new culture, our integrated team of midwives, lactation consultants and interpreters offer not only physical examinations but also emotional and mental health support, education, and access to local resources.

75% of mothers coming to AMURTEL report improvement with breastfeeding and more than half say they feel better informed and more confident about feeding solid foods.

Peer supporters convey not only knowledge, but also shared language, cultural understanding, and lived experience. Concepts come alive when communicated by women who understand the realities their peers are facing firsthand.

Our team walks alongside each mother as she navigates healthcare, education, and social services. Support is tailored to each family’s needs—from attending medical appointments, to supporting school enrollment, to connecting families with essential resources.

The free shop offers items for children from newborn to eight years old, shared from mother to mother in a welcoming environment.
